Celebrating the grand opening of AHS' Dental, Wellness, and Teaching Health Center

In March 2025, Asian Health Services (AHS) celebrated the official grand opening of the Dental, Wellness, and Teaching Health Center powered by Delta Dental of California and Affiliates. The new clinic in San Leandro increases AHS’ capacity to tackle significant health access challenges through a unique integrated care model combining both dental and behavioral health services under one roof. This state-of-the-art facility was designed to provide comprehensive care for the community, addressing critical gaps in both dental and behavioral health services.

Key Features of the New Clinic Include:

Dental & Behavioral Health Integration

AHS was the first health center in the country to spearhead the integration of oral health and behavioral health while providing four specialties in 2018. The San Leandro clinic is AHS’ second and one of only a few clinics in California with an integrated model of dental and behavioral health services, improving overall health outcomes and addressing the unique needs of communities facing both increased mental health need and the stigma associated with seeking mental health support.

Expanding Access to Care

By increasing clinic capacity, the new facility will reduce wait times for dental services in language, improving access to care for AHS patients and community members residing in San Leandro and adjacent areas.

Dental Residency Program

As part of its commitment to building the next generation of healthcare professionals, the clinic will also provide the first dental residency program with four specialties in Northern California. This program will offer dentists-in-training the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while serving and addressing the needs of the local community.

Over 120 donors and community partners joined AHS for the festive ribbon-cutting celebration and donor wall reveal, including San Leandro Mayor Juan Gonzalez, San Leandro Vice Mayor Xouhoa Bowen, Former Assemblymember Phil Ting, Alameda County Supervisors Nikki Bas Fortunato, and Alameda Supervisor Lena Tam.

The new AHS Dental & Wellness Clinic, located at 770 E. 14th Street in San Leandro, is now open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM. AHS patients can schedule an appointment by calling (510) 318-8888.

In solidarity with over 100 community partners across the US, Asian Health Services mobilized under the One Nation Coalition in 2018 to fight against the harmful Public Charge Rule change and to promote immigrant rights and access to health care.
In 2005, Asian Health Services established the California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative to address workplace and reproductive health issues faced by low-income Vietnamese immigrant and refugee workers. In 2016, AHS worked successfully to co-sponsor and pass the California Healthy Nail Salon Bill (AB2125).
In the early 2000s, AHS led a local campaign called "Revive Chinatown" to make Oakland Chinatown safer, more pedestrian-friendly, and economically viable. That resulted in the installation of the four-way scramble crosswalks with other lighting and sidewalk improvements in the Chinatown commercial core.
The 1978 passage of Proposition 13 threatened to eliminate crucial funding to community based organizations. AHS worked in collaboration with local community groups to galvanize our patient base to protest Prop 13 cuts. As a result of community mobilization and protests, AHS preserved critical funds at the County level, which enabled community groups to continue serving the medical needs of the AAPI community.
