my name is Susan Lowe and I've been a family physician here at Asian health services for over 18 years I grew up here in Oakland Chinatown I've gone to Lincoln Elementary School and tiny school here so when I was done with school and I really wanted to do primary care and really wanted to do something useful for the community and use my language skills this was the natural fit and I really have a close connection with just a space the building
that I work with now used to be lantern restaurant and lost actually place I got married one of the unique things about Asian health services that we recognized pregnancy as not just a health need but it's also a need to build community so we actually have a unique program now call mommies to be where we do group visits with the prenatal patients where the patients learn from each other they learn how to navigate the u.s. Western hospital system as well as
how to navigate like Target to buy diapers we saw a lot of Asian immigrants woman who were fairly isolated they immigrated here from China or wherever they came from often without any of their social structure that they left behind the other country so by having these mommies groups when they're pregnant it helped them build an instant community of people like themselves and we started this about six or seven years ago and the people who bonded in that group continued to bond
after they delivered they get together with their kids and have playdates they still go shopping together so I really felt like this is a valuable program the Asian health services decide to take a plunge on and we're still keeping it going you

my name is su Chan and I'm a physician here at Asian health services and have been here for over 40 years in 1974 when Asian health services first started we were a two-room storefront clinic serving I would say wow only a few hundred patients and so here was Asian health services a young new energetic organization on the cusp of providing health services to a very very underserved community and I jumped on board and for over 40 years have seen the wisdom
of that choice and continued to be here enthusiastically working for the well-being and the health of our community
