Asian-Black Racial Healing Project
In 2021, Asian Health Services and Baywell Health (formerly West Oakland Health Council) initiated the Asian-Black Racial Healing Research Project in response to the heightened violence experienced by both communities. Throughout the last three years, we’ve collaborated on various initiatives, including joint food distribution events, mental health strategies, and cultural celebrations. Asian Health Services and Baywell Health engaged over 1,000 Asian and Black community members in a series of listening sessions, interviews, focus groups, and surveys to discuss violence, racism, and healing. Here are a few faces and voices from our communities.
“I like hearing different languages, people who don’t sound like me and it makes me curious as to where they’re from… So, it gives me an opportunity just to see different cultures, see the way they dress, to see the different foods that they cook, things of that nature.”

“We should all communicate better and unite together. Because of our cultural differences, it would be hard. We need a communication bridge to connect Asian and Black groups. This can increase our power in this society. This can lessen racial discrimination in our community.”
